He is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kerala in 1975. He then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the same university in 1977. He began his political career in 1979 when he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency. He was re-elected in 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. He served as the Minister for Education in the Government of Kerala from 2006 to 2011. V. Sivankutty is currently 69 years old.
