Persis Khambatta was an Indian actress and model who is best known for her role as Lieutenant Ilia in the 1979 science fiction film Star Trek: The Motion Picture. She was the first Indian actress to appear in a major Hollywood production. Khambatta was born in Bombay, India, on 2 October 1948. She was the daughter of a Parsi father and a Gujarati mother. She attended St. Xavier's College in Bombay and studied economics. Khambatta began her career as a model in India, appearing in numerous television commercials and print advertisements. She was the first Indian woman to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. In 1975, she moved to the United States and began appearing in television commercials and print advertisements. In 1979, Khambatta was cast in the role of Lieutenant Ilia in the science fiction film Star Trek: The Motion Picture. She was the first Indian actress to appear in a major Hollywood production. Khambatta went on to appear in several other films, including Megaforce (1982), Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983), and The Bride (1985). She also appeared in numerous television shows, including The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and The A-Team. Khambatta died of a heart attack on 18 August 1998 in Los Angeles, California. She was 49 years old.

On August 17, 1998, Persis Khambatta was taken to the Marine Hospital in South Mumbai, complaining of chest pains.
In 1985, producer Judith de Lane was going to produce a film on Indira Gandhi. Persis dressed up as Indira and sent a video. The film was never made.
She was considered for the title role in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983), but was passed over for Maud Adams.
This led to roles in Nighthawks (1981), Megaforce (1982) and Warrior of the Lost World (1984).

A year before her death, she wrote and published a coffee table book called "Pride of India" which featured former Miss Indias; it was dedicated to Mother Teresa and part of the royalties went to the Missionaries of Charity.
