Laurie Anderson is an American avant-garde artist, composer, musician and film director whose work spans performance art, pop music, and multimedia projects. She became widely known outside the art world in 1981 when her single "O Superman" reached number two on the UK pop charts. Anderson is a pioneer in electronic music and has invented several devices that she has used in her recordings and performance art shows. Anderson has released seven studio albums and six live albums. She has also written and directed several feature-length films and has written and performed in several theatrical works. She has been nominated for two Grammy Awards and has won the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. Anderson has also been awarded the Polar Music Prize, the first US artist to receive the honor.
