Republican U.S. senator from Alabama, 2 January 1981-3 January 1987. In November 1980, he defeated Donald Stewart, the Democrat incumbent. Stewart resigned his seat a day early, and Denton was sworn in the same day, becoming the senior member of the 1980 senatorial class.
He is known for his work on When Hell Was in Session (1979), Crashing the Party (2009) and Return with Honor (1998). He was married to Mary Belle Bordone and Kathryn Jane Maury.
