Doug Lawrence is an American musician, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with the band Tower of Power, for which he has been a member since 1975. He has also worked with a variety of other artists, including Santana, Huey Lewis and the News, and the Doobie Brothers. Born on October 11, 1956, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Lawrence grew up in Oakland, California. He began playing the saxophone at the age of nine, and by the time he was in high school, he was playing professionally. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied music. In 1975, Lawrence joined Tower of Power, and he has been a member of the band ever since. He has also worked with a variety of other artists, including Santana, Huey Lewis and the News, and the Doobie Brothers. Lawrence has released several solo albums, including "Saxophone Colossus" (1995), "The Doug Lawrence Quartet" (1998), and "The Doug Lawrence Organ Trio" (2001). He has also composed music for television and film, including the theme song for the television show "The Drew Carey Show." Doug Lawrence comes from a musical family. His father and two brothers were professional musicians and both his sisters played. His mother was a dancer. Lawrence spent over 20 years in New York City, during which time he worked with Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, and Roy Eldridge among others. Lawrence has also recorded with many prominent jazz musicians such as Buck Clayton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Wild Bill Davis, Hank Jones, Mel Lewis, and George Cables as well as recording four albums as a leader - "Soul Carnival", "High Heel Sneakers", "Big Band Swing" and "Street Wise". Lawrence served in the West Point Band's Jazz Knights in the early 1980s as the lead tenor saxophonist.
