He was born on February 17, 1933 in Olympia, Washington. Crandall enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1952. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Ia Drang. After the war, Crandall served in various staff and command positions, including as the commander of the 1st Cavalry Division in the late 1970s. He retired from the Army in 1977 with the rank of colonel. In 2007, Crandall was inducted into the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. After retiring from the Army in 1977 as a Lieutenant Colonel, he worked several jobs in different states before settling down with his wife in his home state of Washington. They had three sons: Robert Donovan, Steven Bruce, and Michael David. As of 2011, Crandall lived in Washington State.
Retired U.S. Army officer who belatedly received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in 1965 in 2007. He flew an unarmed helicopter 22 times through intense enemy fire to bring ammunition and supplies and evacuate the wounded during the battle. By the time he left the Vietnam War, he had flown over 900 combat missions.
