He is the brother of drummer Carlton Barrett and the uncle of Aston Barrett Jr., who is also a musician. Barrett began his career as a session musician in the late 1960s, playing bass on recordings by artists such as The Heptones, The Maytals, and Bob Marley and the Wailers. He was the musical director of the Wailers from 1974 until their breakup in 1981. Barrett has released several solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Aston Barrett (1980) and Reggae Vibes (1982). He has also produced albums for other artists, including Burning Spear's Hail H.I.M. (1984) and Bunny Wailer's Blackheart Man (1976).
