Yogi Berra was an American professional baseball catcher, manager, and coach who played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was an 18-time All-Star and won 10 World Series championships as a player—more than any other player in MLB history. Berra had a career batting average of .285, while hitting 358 home runs and 1,430 runs batted in. He is one of only five players to have won the American League Most Valuable Player Award three times. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 12, 1925. He was the son of Italian immigrants Pietro and Paolina Berra. He attended South Side High School in St. Louis and signed with the Yankees in 1943. He made his major league debut in 1946 and played for the Yankees until 1963. He then played for the New York Mets from 1965 to 1972. Berra was a three-time American League Most Valuable Player, winning the award in 1951, 1954, and 1955. He was also a 10-time World Series champion, playing on the Yankees teams that won in 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, and 1962. He was named to 18 All-Star teams and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra was also a successful manager, leading the Yankees to the 1964 American League pennant and the Mets to the 1973 National League pennant. He was named Manager of the Year in both leagues. Berra died on September 22, 2015, at the age of 90.

Filed a $10 million suit in Manhattan State Supreme Court against TBS for use of his name in an advertisement for Sex and the City (1998). The ad, which has appeared on New York City buses and in subways, gives possible definitions of "yogasm" as: (a) a type of yo-yo trick, (b) sex with Yogi Berra and (c) what Samantha has with a guy from yoga class. Berra claims that his name and reputation has been tainted (27 January 2005).
