William John Donaldson is an American businessman and former Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He was born on 24 September, 1958 in New York City. Donaldson graduated from Yale University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He then attended Harvard Business School, where he earned his MBA in 1962. Donaldson began his career in the financial services industry in 1962, when he joined Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ). He served as the firm's President and Chief Operating Officer from 1973 to 1975, and as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1975 to 1982. Donaldson served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Stock Exchange from 1990 to 1995. He was also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aetna, Inc. from 2000 to 2005. Donaldson was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 2003 to 2005. On December 9, 2006, Donaldson was named US zone president in FIDE, replacing Robert Tanner, who resigned on December 4, 2006.
In 1990, Donaldson was elected to the Policy Board of the United States Chess Federation. He also became an editor of the magazine Inside Chess, published by Yasser Seirawan. After the magazine folded, he moved to San Francisco, where he became chess director of the San Francisco Mechanics Institute. He is constantly writing and producing chess books, mostly biographies of historical chess figures. He qualified to play in the 2002 and the 2003 U.S. Chess Championship. He has achieved two norms for the title of Grandmaster, at Lindsborg 2002 and at Stratton Mountain 2003.
At the 1988 Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Donaldson married Elena Akhmilovskaya, a member of the Soviet team. Afterwards, while the tournament was still going on, the couple immediately travelled to the United States. They divorced approximately one year later.
