William A. Fraker is an American cinematographer and director. He was born on September 29, 1923 in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his work on films such as Rosemary's Baby (1968), Heaven Can Wait (1978), and WarGames (1983). Fraker began his career in the 1950s as a camera operator and cinematographer. He worked on a number of television shows and films, including The Twilight Zone, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Wild Wild West. In 1968, Fraker was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Rosemary's Baby. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Heaven Can Wait in 1978. Fraker also directed a number of films, including The Towering Inferno (1974), Murphy's War (1971), and The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981). Fraker has been married twice and has two children. William A. Fraker was born on September 29, 1923 in Los Angeles, California, USA as William Ashman Fraker.
William Fraker's maternal grandmother brought his mother and aunt to Los Angeles riding a mule all the way from Mazatlan, Mexico, in 1910. She became a photographer for Monroe Studios in downtown Los Angeles and taught her son-in-law, William's father, how to take pictures, who later became a still photographer for Columbia Pictures, where he ran the gallery at the studio from 1927 until 1934, when he died at an early age following a bout with pneumonia. His uncle, Bud Fraker, was also a still photographer for Columbia Pictures, and later for Paramount Pictures.
