Walter Murch is an American film editor, sound designer, and director. He is best known for his work on films such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, and Cold Mountain. He has won three Academy Awards for his work in film editing, sound design, and sound mixing. Murch was born in New York City in 1943. He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied film and music. After graduating, he worked as an assistant editor on films such as The Conversation and The Godfather. He then went on to edit films such as Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, and Cold Mountain. Murch has won three Academy Awards for his work in film editing, sound design, and sound mixing. He has also been nominated for seven other Academy Awards. He has also won numerous other awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Editing for The English Patient, the American Cinema Editors Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film for Cold Mountain, and the American Cinema Editors Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film for The Godfather. Murch is currently married to director and producer Susan Korda. They have two children.

Ripley (1999). Mr. Murch was, along with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, a founding member of northern California cinema. Mr.
Murch has directed --Return to Oz (1985) -- and longs to do so again, but as an editor and sound man he is one of the few universally acknowledged masters in his field.
He edited sound on American Graffiti (1973) and The Godfather: Part II (1974), won his first Academy Award nomination for The Conversation (1974), won his first Oscar for Apocalypse Now (1979), and won an unprecedented double Oscar for Best Sound and Best Film Editing for his work on The English Patient (1996).
Walter Murch has been editing sound in Hollywood since starting on Francis Ford Coppola's film The Rain People (1969).
Most recently he helped reconstruct Touch of Evil (1958) to Orson Welles' original notes, and edited The Talented Mr.
Son of Canadian painter, Walter Tandy Murch (August 17, 1907 - December 11, 1967). His first one-man show was in 1941 at Wakefield Gallery in New York. Murch regularly mounted solo exhibitions every two years until his death in 1967. By 1950, he also taught at Pratt Institute and later at New York University, Columbia University and Boston University.
