Timeline

Delightful character actress who held her own against such acting heavyweights as Charles Laughton, Boris Karloff, Tyrone Power, Barbara Stanwyck, and Sydney Greenstreet. Often cast by studio heads as comic relief thanks to her thick Irish accent and rubber-faced expressions, most notably in Universal's horror classics, The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and The Invisible Man (1933).

Appeared in eight Oscar Best Picture nominees: Cavalcade (1933), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934), David Copperfield (1935), The Informer (1935), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Random Harvest (1942), The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957), with Cavalcade being the only winner.

Was brought to Hollywood in 1932 to recreate her role in "Cavalcade.".
