Tom Scholz is an American musician, songwriter, inventor, engineer, and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder of the rock band Boston. He is also the inventor of the Rockman guitar amplifier. Scholz was born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 10, 1947. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1970. Scholz began playing guitar in high school and formed the band Freehold while attending MIT. After graduating, he worked as an engineer at Polaroid Corporation and began writing and recording music in his basement studio. In 1975, he released the demo tape of the song "More Than a Feeling" to radio stations, which became a hit. Scholz formed the band Boston in 1976 and released their self-titled debut album in 1976. The album was a massive success, selling over 17 million copies in the United States alone. The band released several more albums over the years, including Don't Look Back (1978), Third Stage (1986), and Walk On (1994). In addition to his work with Boston, Scholz has released several solo albums, including Scholz (1980), Just Push Play (2001), and Tom Scholz's New England (2005). He has also invented several musical instruments and audio equipment, including the Rockman guitar amplifier. Scholz has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Boston. He has also received several awards, including the ASCAP Founders Award in 2004 and the Boston Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. After succumbing to pressure from Epic Records, he released Boston's second album, "Don't Look Back", in 1978, just two years after the group's self-titled debut album. Since then, new Boston studio albums have been released at eight year intervals - "Third Stage" (1986), "Walk On" (1994) and "Corporate America" (2002).
U.S. hits include "More Than a Feeling" (#5, 1976), "Long Time" (#22, 1977), "Peace of Mind" (#38, 1977), "Don't Look Back" (#4, 1978), "A Man I'll Never Be" (#31, 1978), "Amanda" (#1- 2 weeks, 1986), "We're Ready" (#9, 1986), and "Can'tcha Say (You Believe in Love)" (#20, 1987). There were no hits off their fourth album, 'Walk On.'
Lead guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter for the band Boston. Formed in 1975, their album releases include "Boston" (1976), "Don't Look Back" (1978), "Third Stage" (1986), "Walk On" (1994), and "Greatest Hits" (1997). Other members included Bradley Delp on vocals and guitar, Barry Goudreau on guitar, Fran Sheehan on bass and Sib Hashian on drums. By the release of their third album, only Scholz and Delp remained from the original line-up. When "Walk On" came out in 1994, Scholz was the only remaining original member still in the band.
