Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. He was born on 6 June 1875 in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was the son of Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, a senator and a grain merchant, and his wife Júlia da Silva Bruhns. Mann studied at the University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich. He began his career as a writer in 1901, when his first short story, "Little Mr Friedemann," was published in the Berliner Tageblatt. He went on to write several novels, including Buddenbrooks (1901), The Magic Mountain (1924), and Doctor Faustus (1947). Mann was married to Katia Pringsheim from 1905 until his death in 1955. They had six children, including the novelist Erika Mann and the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Klaus Mann. Mann was a vocal opponent of the Nazi regime and was forced to flee Germany in 1933. He settled in Switzerland, where he wrote his most famous works, including The Magic Mountain and Doctor Faustus. Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 for his "outstanding contributions to literature." He died on 12 August 1955 in Zurich, Switzerland.
