Born in Emerson, North Carolina, Jackson began his career in the late 1950s, performing in local clubs and on the radio. He signed with Columbia Records in 1959 and released his first single, "Life to Go", which became a Top 10 hit. He went on to have a successful career, releasing several hit singles and albums. Jackson has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
