Steve Niehaus is a former American football defensive tackle who played for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He was the first overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame. Niehaus was born on September 25, 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, where he was an All-State selection in football. He then attended the University of Notre Dame, where he was a two-time All-American and a two-time Academic All-American. Niehaus was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the first overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft. He played for the Bengals from 1976 to 1983, appearing in 103 games and recording 24 sacks. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1979 and 1980. Niehaus was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also inducted into the Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor in 2004.
