Shirley Bassey is a Welsh singer and actress who has been active in the music industry since the 1950s. She is best known for her powerful, emotive voice and her signature song, "Goldfinger". Bassey was born in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, to Eliza Jane (née Start) and Henry Bassey. She began singing in local clubs and pubs at the age of 15. Bassey is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She was awarded the Freedom of the City of Cardiff in 1999.
