After graduating, he attended the University of North Florida, where he studied music composition and theory. Mackin joined Yellowcard in 1997, and has been a member ever since. He has contributed to all of the band's albums, and has co-written several of their songs. He has also composed music for films and television shows, including the theme song for the Netflix series Stranger Things. Mackin has won several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2006.
