She was raised in India and attended school there until she was 16. At the age of 16, Ruth Becker Blanchard moved to the United States to attend college. She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1921 with a degree in sociology. In 1923, Ruth Becker Blanchard married her first husband, a doctor named William Blanchard. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter. In 1931, Ruth Becker Blanchard and her family were living in India when a massive earthquake struck the region. The family was able to survive the disaster, but their home was destroyed. Ruth Becker Blanchard and her family were forced to flee to the United States. In the United States, Ruth Becker Blanchard worked as a social worker and a teacher. She also wrote several books about her experiences in India. Ruth Becker Blanchard passed away in 1984 at the age of 85. She is remembered as a survivor of the 1931 earthquake and as an advocate for the rights of women and children in India.
