Ruby Dee was an American actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, and civil rights activist. She was best known for her roles in the films A Raisin in the Sun (1961) and Do the Right Thing (1989). She was also a recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and the National Medal of Arts. Dee was born on October 27, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Hunter College in New York City and graduated with a degree in Romance Languages. She began her career as a stage actress in the 1940s, appearing in productions such as Anna Lucasta and The Smile of the World. In 1961, Dee starred in the film adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in the films Uptight (1968), The Incident (1967), and Do the Right Thing (1989). In addition to her acting career, Dee was an active civil rights activist. She was a member of the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She was also a founding member of the Negro Ensemble Company.
