He is a key figure in the acid jazz movement, and is known for his signature sound of funk-infused jazz and soul music. Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s. During this time, he released several albums that achieved moderate success, including Everybody Loves the Sunshine (1976) and Fever (1979). Ayers has collaborated with numerous artists, including Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, and Jill Scott. He has also been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists, including A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Jay-Z. In 2020, he was inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame.
