Robert Brunner is an American industrial designer and entrepreneur. He is the founder and principal of Ammunition, a design and branding firm based in San Francisco. He is also the former head of industrial design at Apple Inc. Brunner was born in 1958 in the United States. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial design. He then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in industrial design from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Brunner has worked for a number of companies, including Apple Inc., where he was the head of industrial design from 1989 to 1996. During his time at Apple, he was responsible for the design of the PowerBook G3, the iMac G3, and the Power Mac G4 Cube. Brunner is the founder and principal of Ammunition, a design and branding firm based in San Francisco. He has also served as a design consultant for a number of companies, including Microsoft, Samsung, and Beats by Dre. Brunner has been recognized for his work, receiving numerous awards, including the National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in 2004. By mid-2007 Brunner left Pentagram to start Ammunition Design Group. In 2008, former MetaDesign leaders Brett Wickens and Matt Rolandson joined Ammunition LLC as partners. Brunner leads a design team, Ammunition Design Group, offering product, identity and interaction design and strategy consulting to many U.S. and international clients. Brunner currently serves on the Board of advisors for Ember Technologies.
In 2006, Brunner partnered Alex Siow, founder of San Francisco-based Zephyr Ventilation, to launch outdoor grill design firm Fuego. Emblematic of his relationship with Siow, he designed the Arc Collection of modern range-hoods for Zephyr Ventilation.
In January 1996, he became a partner in the San Francisco office of Pentagram.
Brunner received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from San José State University in 1981. After working as a designer and project manager at several high technology companies, including Lunar Design in 1984. In 1989, Brunner accepted the position of Director of Industrial Design at Apple Computer, where he provided design and direction for all Apple product lines, including the PowerBook. He was succeeded by Jonathan Ive in 1997. Brunner claims that while with Apple, he hired Ive three times.
