He is the son of the late Arthur Socarides, a psychoanalyst, and the late Eleanor Socarides, a psychoanalyst and professor. Socarides graduated from Harvard College in 1976 and received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1979. He began his career as a lawyer in the New York office of the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. In the early 1990s, Socarides became a political strategist and public relations executive. He served as the White House Special Assistant and Senior Adviser to President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1999.
