Richard Atkinson is an American professor of psychology and former president of the University of California. He was born on December 17, 1958 in San Francisco, California. Atkinson earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1980 and his doctorate in psychology from Stanford in 1983. He then went on to become a professor of psychology at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as chair of the department from 1991 to 1995. Atkinson was appointed president of the University of California in 1995 and served in that role until 2003. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the university's research and educational programs, as well as the development of new campuses and the establishment of the California Digital Library. Atkinson is currently a professor of psychology at the University of California, San Diego. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Atkinson was consecrated by Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, in St Paul's Cathedral on Ascension Day 2012. A Service of Welcome into the Diocese took place at St Paul's Church, Bedford on 19 May 2012 at which Atkinson also preached his first sermon as a bishop.
