When Jackie Robinson broke baseball's racial barrier with the Dodgers, Branca, unlike some of his teammates, tried to make Robinson feel welcome. In 1972, Branca was one of Robinson's pallbearers.

Appeared on the game show Concentration (1958); won 17 straight games, 3 short of the 20-game limit.

He retired from baseball in 1956, and went into the insurance industry. For 17 years, he also was president and chief executive of the nonprofit Baseball Assistance Team, providing financial help to former ballplayers who are struggling.

Was the Brooklyn Dodger pitcher who gave up New York Giant Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning home run in 1951 - "The Shot Heard 'Round the World".

Was selected for Major League Baseball's National League All-Star team three times (1947-1949).
