He is best known for his success in the pool, having won multiple medals at the European Championships and World Championships. He also competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he finished in fourth place in the 200m butterfly. Caland began swimming at the age of 10 and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He won his first international medal at the 1977 European Championships, where he took bronze in the 200m butterfly. He went on to win multiple medals at the European Championships and World Championships, including gold in the 200m butterfly at the 1981 World Championships. Caland retired from competitive swimming in 1985 and has since become a successful coach. He has coached multiple swimmers to success at the Olympic Games, including Laure Manaudou, who won gold in the 400m freestyle at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Caland is married and has two children. He currently lives in Paris, France.
