Percy Sledge is an American R&B and soul singer best known for his hit single "When a Man Loves a Woman". He began his career in the mid-1960s and had a string of hits throughout the decade. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Sledge was born in Leighton, Alabama, and grew up singing gospel music in church. He began his career as a hospital orderly in the early 1960s and was discovered by record producer Quin Ivy while performing at a nightclub in Sheffield, Alabama. His first single, "When a Man Loves a Woman", was released in 1966 and became an international hit, reaching number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. Sledge went on to have a successful career, releasing several more hit singles, including "Warm and Tender Love" and "Take Time to Know Her". He also released several albums, including the gold-certified When a Man Loves a Woman. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Sledge has continued to perform and record throughout his career, and in 2014 he released his first album in over a decade, The Gospel of Percy Sledge. He has also been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
