He suffered a stroke at his home in Enugu, Nigeria in December 2010 and was seeking treatment in London, England when he died.
He returned to Nigeria after receiving a presidential pardon in 1982. He became a businessman in Lagos and tried to run for President several times as well.
He wanted the world to recognize the Biafra Republic section of Nigeria as an independent nation. During 15 months of war, the country's 29,000 square miles had been reduced to 5,000 and soaring deaths from war and famine after a 30 month war. The secessionist resistance ended in January 1970. The leader, a general, and he went into exile in the Ivory Coast and London, England.

He had three wives. His first wife, Njideka, a law student from Oxford University were married in 1962 and she died in 2010. His second wife, Stella Onyeador, died in 2009. His third wife, Bianca Odinaka Onoh, a former beauty queen and businesswoman and 34 years his junior were married in 1994.
He returned to Nigeria in 1956 and joined the Nigerian Army in 1957 from soldier. He rose in the ranks after Nigeria gained it's independence in 1960 from the British Empire. In 1966, he became military governor of the Ibo region and declared Biafran independence after repression enveloped his people, the Biafrans.
He studied at Kings College in Lagos, Nigeria; Epson College in Surrey, England; and Lincoln College at Oxford University in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England where he graduated with honors in history in 1955.
