Nora Ephron was an American writer, director, producer, and essayist. She was born in New York City on May 19, 1941, to screenwriters Henry and Phoebe Ephron. She was the eldest of four sisters, all of whom became successful writers. Ephron began her career as a journalist, writing for The New York Post and Esquire magazine. She then moved into screenwriting, writing the screenplay for the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989). She went on to write and direct a number of other successful films, including Sleepless in Seattle (1993), You've Got Mail (1998), and Julie & Julia (2009). Ephron was nominated for three Academy Awards for her work in film, and won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay for When Harry Met Sally. She was also the recipient of a number of other awards, including the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay for Sleepless in Seattle. Nora Ephron had an estimated net worth of $20 million at the time of her death in 2012.

Her guess was proved correct when on May 31, 2005, Mark Felt, former assistant director of the FBI during the Richard Nixon administration, was identified as Deep Throat.

Ephron followed up by helming and co-writing Sleepless in Seattle (1993), a romantic comedy in which lovers Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are separated for most of the film.

Ephron made her directorial debut with the comedy This Is My Life (1992), co-scripted by her sister Delia Ephron, which starred Julie Kavner as a single mother who struggles to establish herself as a stand-up comedienne.
