Nathan McCall is an American author, journalist, and lecturer. He was born in 1955 in Portsmouth, Virginia, and grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He attended Norfolk State University and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1977. McCall is best known for his memoir, Makes Me Wanna Holler: A Young Black Man in America, which was published in 1994. The book chronicles his life growing up in Norfolk, his involvement in gangs, and his eventual transformation into a successful journalist. McCall has also written several other books, including What's Going On: Personal Essays, and Them: A Memoir of Parents. He has written for The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe. McCall is currently a lecturer at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Virginia. He is married and has two children.

In an April 2014 interview with Ebony magazine, McCall stated that he was amazed that Makes Me Wanna Holler was still selling after 20 years.
His first novel Them: A Novel, dealing with issues of gentrification in an Atlanta neighborhood, was published in 2007. Them tells the story of Barlowe Reed, a single, forty-something African-American man, who has to come to terms with the gentrification of his neighborhood, in particular the influx of white people to the area.
As the stepson of a Navy man, McCall grew up in various locations, such as Morocco and Norfolk, Virginia. After serving three years in prison, he studied journalism at Norfolk State University. He reported for The Virginian Pilot-Ledger Star and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before moving to The Washington Post In 1989.
