Michael Deering is an American computer scientist and software engineer. He is best known for his work on 3D graphics and virtual reality. He was born in 1956 in California. Deering received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979. He then went on to receive his Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1981. Deering began his career at Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) in 1982. He was the lead architect of the RealityEngine, the first commercial graphics system to use a programmable graphics pipeline. He also designed the first commercial implementation of the OpenGL graphics library. Deering left SGI in 1997 to join Sun Microsystems, where he was the chief architect of the Java 3D API. He also worked on the Java Media Framework and the Java Speech API. Deering left Sun in 2002 to join Google, where he was the director of engineering for Google Earth. He left Google in 2008 to join Apple, where he was the director of engineering for the iPhone. Deering is currently the vice president of engineering at Oculus VR, a virtual reality technology company. As of 2021, Michael Deering's net worth is estimated to be around $20 million.

Michael Frank Deering (born 1956) is a computer scientist, a former chief engineer for Sun Microsystems in Mountain View, California, and a widely recognized expert on artificial intelligence, computer vision, 3D graphics hardware/software, very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design and virtual reality. Deering oversaw Sun's 3D graphics technical strategy as the chief hardware graphics architect and is a co-architect of the Java 3D API, developing Java platform software. He is the inventor of deferred shading, inventor of Geometry compression, co-inventor of 3D-RAM, and the chief architect for a number of Sun's 3D graphics hardware accelerators. Many of his inventions have been patented.
