Marta Linares de Martinelli is a Panamanian politician and diplomat who served as the Vice President of Panama from 2009 to 2014. She is the first woman to hold the position. She was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2009. Linares de Martinelli was born in Panama City, Panama, on December 1, 1956. She studied law at the University of Panama and obtained a master's degree in international relations from the University of Miami. Linares de Martinelli began her political career in the 1990s, when she was appointed as the Panamanian ambassador to the United States. She was later appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2004, and served in that position until 2009. In 2009, she was elected as the Vice President of Panama, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She served in that position until 2014. Linares de Martinelli is currently a member of the Panamanian National Assembly. She is also a member of the Panamanian Liberal Party. She later studied insurance brokerage at the University of Panama. In 1978, she married supermarket chain owner Ricardo Martinelli, with whom she had three children: Ricardo Alberto, Luis Enrique, and Carolina Elizabeth.
Marta Linares de Martinelli (born Marta Linares on December 1, 1956) became the First Lady of Panama on July 1, 2009, when her husband, Ricardo Martinelli, became President of Panama. On January 29, 2014 she was chosen to compete for Vice-President of Panama alongside Jose Domingo Arias running for President but lost.
