He has also written several screenplays, including the cult classic film, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984). Leyner attended Rutgers University, where he earned a degree in English. He then went on to pursue a career in advertising, working as a copywriter for several major companies. He eventually left the advertising world to pursue writing full-time. Leyner has been married to his wife, Susan, since 1985. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
