Lola Young, Baroness Young of Hornsey is a British peer and academic. She was born on 1 June 1951 in Kensington, London, England. She is the daughter of Nigerian parents, and was educated at the University of Sussex, where she obtained a BA in English and American Literature in 1973. She then went on to obtain a PhD in English Literature from the University of London in 1979. Young has held a number of academic posts, including at the University of Sussex, the University of East Anglia, and the University of London. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2004 New Year Honours for services to education. In 2005, she was created a life peer as Baroness Young of Hornsey, of Hornsey in the London Borough of Haringey, and was introduced in the House of Lords on 11 May 2005. She is a member of the Labour Party. Young is a patron of the charity Arts Emergency, which provides mentoring and support to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a career in the arts. Lady Young of Hornsey has been married to Barrie Birch since 1984; they have one son.

Young worked as a professional actress from 1976 to 1984, and also presented a number of BBC programmes aimed at young children such as Play School and, on Radio 4, Listening Corner and Playtime. She had been a residential social worker in the London Borough of Islington from 1971 to 1973. Her most prominent role as an actress was in children's sitcom Metal Mickey which ran from 1980 to 1983. In 1985, she became co-director and training and development manager at the Haringey Arts Council, a post she held until 1989.

Born in Kensington, Lola Young was educated at the Parliament Hill School for Girls in London and went then to the New College of Speech and Drama, where she received a diploma in dramatic art in 1975, and a teaching certificate one year later. In 1988 she graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Cultural Studies.
