In 2016 he was appointed as co-leader of the Democratic Left Alliance. In 2018 he gave up his affiliation with the Alliance. In 2019 Gawkowski started cooperation with Robert Biedroń and he was a candidate to the European Parliament. He did not get a parliamentary mandate. The same year, he was successfully chosen to the Sejm (9th term) and appointed as leader of the parliamentary club.
