James C. Collins is an American author, consultant, and lecturer on business and management. He is best known for his books Built to Last and Good to Great. He is the co-founder of a management research and consulting firm, and a professor at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Born on January 25, 1958, in Aurora, Colorado, Collins is the son of a United States Air Force officer. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1980 with a degree in mathematics and economics. He then earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1984. Collins began his career as a research associate at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He then joined the consulting firm Bain & Company, where he worked for six years. In 1995, he co-founded a management research and consulting firm, and in 1997, he became a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Collins is the author of several books, including Built to Last (1994), Good to Great (2001), How the Mighty Fall (2009), and Great by Choice (2011). He then spent 18 months in McKinsey & Co.'s San Francisco office. He was exposed to what may have been an influential project for him – two partners at McKinsey, Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, were running a McKinsey research project that later turned into the best-seller In Search of Excellence.
In 1995, he founded a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, where he now conducts research and teaches executives from the corporate and social sectors. During that time, Collins has served as a senior executive at CNN International, and also worked with social sector organizations, such as: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Girl Scouts of the USA, the Leadership Network of Churches, the American Association of K-12 School Superintendents, and the United States Marine Corps.
