Walsh was married to actress and producer Susan Landau from 1985 until his death in 1998. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Walsh was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the television movie The Burning Bed (1984). He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the television movie The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom (1993).
