Evans graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 and received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1983. He began his career at Goldman Sachs in 1983, where he worked for over 20 years, eventually becoming the co-head of the Global Investment Research Division. In 2005, he was appointed vice chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia. In 2008, Evans joined Alibaba Group as vice chairman. He is responsible for the company's international strategy and business development. Evans is a member of the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Asia Society. Evans had served on the board of Alibaba since its September 2014 IPO and will continue on the board as a management member. He had known Alibaba founder Jack Ma since before 2005.
