Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth is an American economist and former Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He was born on December 13, 1956 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He then went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1980. Furchtgott-Roth served as a Commissioner of the FCC from 1997 to 2001. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate for deregulation and competition in the telecommunications industry. He also served as a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank, from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, Furchtgott-Roth joined the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation as a senior advisor. He was also a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute from 2004 to 2008. Furchtgott-Roth is currently a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and a contributing editor to the Washington Examiner.
