Frances Mayes is an American author, poet, and memoirist. She is best known for her 1996 memoir Under the Tuscan Sun, which was later adapted into a 2003 film of the same name. Mayes was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, in 1940. She attended the University of Georgia, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in Creative Writing. She then went on to earn a Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida. Mayes has written several books, including the best-selling Under the Tuscan Sun, which chronicles her experiences renovating and living in an abandoned villa in Tuscany. She has also written several other books about her travels in Italy, including Bella Tuscany, A Year in the World, and Every Day in Tuscany. Mayes has also written several books of poetry, including The Discovery of Poetry, Divorce Cake, and The House in the Clouds. She has also written several cookbooks, including In Tuscany and Cooking in the Moment. Mayes is currently living in Cortona, Italy, with her husband, Ed, and their two dogs.

Frances Mayes grew up in Fitzgerald, Georgia, and attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College and the University of Florida. She is a poet, essayist and professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University. She relocated to Cortona, Italy after she bought and renovated a rundown Tuscan farmhouse, Bramasole (literally, "yearning for the sun"), in 1990.
