Ferdinand Marcos was a Filipino politician and lawyer who served as the 10th president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He was a member of the Philippine House of Representatives from 1949 to 1959 and a member of the Philippine Senate from 1959 to 1965. He was also a World War II veteran and a recipient of the Philippine Legion of Honor. Marcos was born on September 11, 1917, in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He was the son of Mariano Marcos and Josefa Edralin. He attended the University of the Philippines College of Law and graduated in 1939. In 1941, Marcos joined the Philippine Army and fought in World War II. He was a recipient of the Philippine Legion of Honor and the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation. In 1949, Marcos was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives and served until 1959. He was then elected to the Philippine Senate and served until 1965. In 1965, Marcos was elected president of the Philippines and served until 1986. During his presidency, he declared martial law in 1972 and was accused of human rights abuses and corruption. He was overthrown in 1986 and died in exile in 1989. Ferdinand Marcos had an estimated net worth of $5 billion at the time of his death in 1989.
