Faisal Basri is an Indonesian economist and politician who was born on 6 November, 1959 in Bandung, Indonesia. He is currently 64 years old. Basri graduated from the University of Indonesia in 1983 with a degree in economics. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988. Basri has held various positions in the Indonesian government, including as Minister of Finance from 1999 to 2000, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises from 2000 to 2001, and Minister of Trade from 2001 to 2004. He has also served as a member of the People's Consultative Assembly from 2004 to 2009. Basri is currently the chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and a professor at the University of Indonesia. He is also a member of the board of directors of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Basri has an estimated net worth of $2 million. In 2012, Basri ran for governor in the Jakarta gubernatorial election as independent along with Biem Benyamin, the son of a prominent Betawi figure, Benyamin Sueb, but he was unsuccessful in winning the governorship, with fewer votes than Joko Widodo, Fauzi Bowo, and Hidayat Nur Wahid, and ahead of Alex Noerdin and Hendarji Supanji.
He obtained his degree in economics in 1985 from University of Indonesia. Basri completed his MA at Vanderbilt University in 1988.

Basri was born in Bandung, West Java on November 6, 1959 to Hasan Basri and Saidah Nasution. His family moved to Jakarta in 1966 after his father got a job in a printing company in Setiabudi, South Jakarta.
