She moved to the United States in 1984 and began competing in professional tournaments. In 1989, Ewa Mataya Laurance won the Women's World Nine-ball Championship, becoming the first woman to do so. She went on to win the event again in 1991 and 1993. She also won the Women's World Eight-ball Championship in 1992 and 1993. In addition to her tournament wins, Ewa Mataya Laurance has also been inducted into the Women's Professional Billiard Association Hall of Fame and the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.
