Abbey was an outspoken advocate for environmental protection and wilderness preservation. He wrote numerous books, essays, and articles on the subject, including Desert Solitaire, which is considered one of the most influential works of environmental literature. He also wrote fiction, including the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which was adapted into a film in 1995. Abbey died on March 14, 1989 in Tucson, Arizona. He was 62 years old. At the time of his death, he had written more than 20 books and numerous articles and essays. His legacy lives on in the form of the Edward Abbey Award, which is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the protection of wilderness and wildlands.
