He was drafted in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the 49ers. Cooper attended Giddings High School in Giddings, Texas, where he was an All-State running back. He then attended the University of Houston, where he was a two-time All-American and set several school records. Cooper was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
