Oberhelman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Illinois in 1975 and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago in 1977. He began his career at Caterpillar in 1975 as a financial analyst and held various positions in the company, including Vice President of the Solar Turbines Division, Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Division, and President of the Engine Division. In 2010, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc.
