Donnie Van Zant is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is the younger brother of the late Ronnie Van Zant, the original lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Donnie Van Zant was born on June 11, 1952, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the youngest of three sons born to Lacy and Marion Van Zant. His older brothers were Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant. Donnie began playing guitar at the age of 12 and formed his first band, The Noble Five, in 1965. He joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1974, replacing original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who had died in a plane crash in 1977. Donnie has released several solo albums, including Donnie Van Zant (1985), Right or Wrong (1987), and Van Zant (1991). He has also released several albums with his brother Johnny as the duo Van Zant. According to a posting in March 2013 on the 38 Special website, "Donnie Van Zant has not been able to join the band's performances for the past six months. In accordance with his doctor's strict orders and due to health issues related to inner-ear nerve damage, he will not be able to join 38 Special onstage in the foreseeable future. Donald Newton Van Zant (born June 11, 1952) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for being a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons; his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987. Donnie and Johnny Van Zant also perform together as the group Van Zant.
