Don Cornelius was an American television show host, producer, and philanthropist. He was best known as the creator and host of the nationally syndicated dance/music franchise Soul Train, which he hosted from 1971 until 1993. Cornelius was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 27, 1936. He attended DuSable High School and later attended college at Crane Junior College. After college, he served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1966, Cornelius began his career in television as a news anchor and reporter for WCIU-TV in Chicago. In 1970, he created and hosted the music and dance show Soul Train, which ran until 2006. The show featured performances by some of the biggest names in music, including Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. Cornelius was also an actor, appearing in films such as I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) and Tap (1989). He was also a philanthropist, donating to various charities and causes. Cornelius died on February 1, 2012, at the age of 75. At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated to be around $50 million.
