Christopher Bishop is a British computer scientist and professor of computer science at the University of Edinburgh. He is best known for his work on the development of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and its application to the field of machine learning. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Bishop was born in Norwich, England, and attended the University of Cambridge, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1981. He then went on to receive a PhD in computer science from the University of Edinburgh in 1985. Bishop has held a number of positions in academia, including professor of computer science at the University of Edinburgh, professor of computer science at the University of Manchester, and professor of computer science at the University of California, Irvine. He has also held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Toronto, and the University of Tokyo. Bishop has authored or co-authored several books, including Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning (2006), Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition (1995), and Bayesian Theory (1992). He has also published numerous papers in the fields of machine learning, pattern recognition, and Bayesian statistics. Bishop was awarded the Tam Dalyell prize in 2009 and the Rooke Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2011.
