Chris Blackwell is a British music producer, entrepreneur, and film producer. He is best known for founding Island Records, which he started in Jamaica in 1959. He is credited with discovering and launching the careers of Bob Marley, U2, and many other artists. He has also produced films, including The Harder They Come (1972) and Countryman (1982). Blackwell was born in London, England, and grew up in Jamaica. He attended the University of Miami, where he studied business and economics. After graduating, he returned to Jamaica and started Island Records. He quickly signed Bob Marley and the Wailers, and their success helped launch Island Records into the international spotlight. Blackwell has been involved in numerous other projects, including producing films, launching a record label in the United States, and founding a hotel chain. He has also been involved in philanthropic work, including the Chris Blackwell Foundation, which supports education and the arts in Jamaica. Blackwell has been honored with numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 2002. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
